r.i.p. ping ping (july 13, 1988 - march 13 2010)
paul mccartney- mccartney II
this was the year i gave up my beef with paul.
nancy martinez- lay it down
um, ya... quebec electro. what can i say? this song isn't on the album, doesn't look like the same person but it is. wig i assume. something about this video really does it for me, perhaps the skin tight purple sequined one piece?
phil manzanera- listen now/diamond head
roxy music guitarist's solo shit featuring robert wyatt, brian eno, godley & creme, robert fripp et al...
manfred mann's earth band- s/t
randy newman covers and massive attack samples...
inner city- paradise
"we don't really need a crowd to have a party..." solid philosophy.
peter green- in the skies
i probably listened to this record more than any other last year, this song in particular. i just never get sick of it. bunk video, sorry...
antena- camino del sol (numero reissue)
i first heard this music via a japanese exchange student that lived with my family when i was a teenager and it's haunted me ever since.
ariel pink's haunted graffiti- before today/loverboy
although i think i prefer his earlier shit that sounds like it was recorded underwater, the new album is truly amazing.
burton cummings- woman love
bryan ferry- boys and girls
john lennon- walls and bridges
i love how there can be an album like this that somehow just fell through the cracks for me until now. solid front to back.

wow, 2010... what a year.
did you know that there were more natural disasters this last year than any other year EVER? and guess what, it's only gonna get worse! and WE'RE DOING IT! we can sit back comfortably and update our blogs and profiles and feel safe and lucky we don't live somewhere like haiti... but it's coming our way. maybe soon. all of a sudden things like high speed wireless internet will seem less important than finding clean water. but i digress, these are just the kinds of things that keep me up at night.
who cares about all that when you can make lists of all the cool records you bought last year with your disposable income! anyway...
NEEDLES//PINS- FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS
seems appropriate, no? the best (and funnest) band to hit vancouver in ages. you can download this album for free somewhere out there in internetland, i suggest you do so.
THE THE- SOUL MINING
this was the sound of my summer.
dope power pop. this song isn't on this album, but you get the idea...
UB40- PRESENT ARMS/PRESENT ARMS IN DUB
my love for reggae is unconditional.
GODLEY & CREME- ISMISM
this year i became obsessed with these dudes. kind of obnoxious, but...
GENERAL PUBLIC- HAND TO MOUTH
i also listened to their other album a ton. beach jams.
RINGO STARR- BEAUCOUPS OF BLUES
i fucking love ringo.
THE SPECIALS- S/T
i may love ringo, but i think i'm IN LOVE with terry hall.
CHRIS REA- ON THE BEACH
my dad would be proud.
VANESSA PARADIS- M&J
what can i say? i was and still am completely OBSESSED with this song.
more to come!

yes, the above trailer features a bit of nudity (oddly enough for a film called "nude for satan"), sorry if that's a bummer for you...
anyway, usually with this kind of italian sleaze/horror film the original title is translated into english designed to appeal to the kind of people in america who would go see a film like this (mainly sleazebags, i assume). the italian title would normally be something like "dreams of the devil's night" or something marginally poetic like that, but not this one... nope, this one is just NUDA PER SATANA. you pretty much know what you're in for from the get go. however, the overall shittiness of this film is balanced with a genuinely dreamlike gothic atmosphere and a reasonably interesting soundtrack. the plot is mostly nonsensical and slow-moving, but it hardly matters, there's enough psychedelic imagery and laughably terrible effects (the fucking spider?? what is that, a football with some pipe cleaners glued to it?), not to mention NUDITY, to keep things interesting. anyway, enjoyable, but strictly for fans of the genre (aka: sleazebags, aka: me).

just a little reminder...
if you have absolutely nothing going on in your life besides social networking and you feel like hauling your sorry ass off the yoga ball and deep into kitsilano on friday evening, DUFFY AND THE DOUBTERS will be playing a FREE SHOW inside the cavernous depths of ZULU RECORDS at about 7:30 or 8:00 for the pure annoyance of any staff members who may have the misfortune of being at work at that time. chances are they'll be the only ones there anyway. who knows, maybe we'll kick over a cd shelf or throw a sufjan stevens display through a window or take a shit on a copy of the wire magazine...
it's gonna be fun, so you should come...

1983??? this fucking thing looks more like 1963.
of all the hundreds of shitty, good/bad/hilarious horror movies i've seen, this is hands down THE WORST. completely incomprehensible. if you've ever seen a movie like herschell gordon lewis' BLOOD FEAST or ed wood's PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, you are familiar with the aesthetic of ultra low-budget horror so inept that it actually transcends itself and becomes something more like art, or at least something enjoyable in a way that the filmmaker never intended. well, A NIGHT TO DISMEMBER is so totally BEYOND even that. that being said, the "film" works in a weird way, possessing a sort of nightmare logic that manages to be deeply unsettling (when it's not being completely hilarious). if this movie was intended as art, and i HIGHLY doubt that it was, it's somewhere in the same freudian neighborhood of luis bunuel's UN CHIEN ANDALOU or alejandro jodorowsky's HOLY MOUNTAIN or SANTA SANGRE (albeit a MUCH shittier, run down section of that freudian neighborhood full of freudian crack houses and freudian meth labs). plot? who fucking knows? the entire thing is dubbed and narrated, seemingly with no regard for what's taking place on screen. and what IS taking place on screen? it's hard to say, it's THAT disjointed. even the above trailer seems to be referring to another film half the time. all i can say is that in the stoned comfort of my living room i felt as if i was watching something that was never meant to be seen by human eyes, something from the reeking bowels of hell itself. in some ways this movie reminded me of david lynch's INLAND EMPIRE, haunting, seemingly nonsensical, constantly turning back in on itself like... a nightmare. there were moments where it almost felt like the pirate television broadcast in david cronenberg's VIDEODROME, like the mere act of watching it was having some unknown transformative effect on my brain. of course, it could have just been the weed. in any case, if you have any interest in watching terrible movies (for whatever reason), you should probably just stick to something like TROLL 2. this movie is too dangerous.

ok, i watched this movie last night and i can safely say that i've never seen anything even remotely like it before in my life. the most a.d.d., insane, psychedelic, fucked up shit EVER! literally a 10 year old japanese girl's idea of horror movie (watch the special features). although not traditionally scary in any way, this shit was so trippy that i actually had feverish pseudo-nightmares about it all night! and i know i'm always going on about how "amazing" all these shitty horror movies are, but seriously, AMAZING!

this is hands down one of the best movies i've ever seen. haunting, surreal, dream-like, mysterious and beautiful, yet none of these words really describe it or the effect it had on me. i woke up on the couch at 6am this morning not sure if i'd actually seen the movie or just dreamed it. truly a masterpiece, no shit.

anybody else remember this song/video from the golden age of much music (steve anthony, erica ehm et al)? i have no idea what the song is about, but it's called "the chinese" and she's made up to look asian for half the video (is there a name for that? besides racist). i guess 1988 was a simpler time. anyway, i've realized that this song has never truly left me since then, i'd say at least once a day for the last 22 years i've had the words "ecoute moi!" pass through my mind in a pouty quebecois accent...
